<<I had my hopes on a New Horizons Band, but the only ones are up in the Chicago area,>>
Definitely, go for ANYTHING New Horizons. I cannot say enough good things about that organization (here: http://www.newhorizonsmusic.org/nhima.html).
You cannot imagine a more welcoming or supportive group of people. They make you feel SO good about yourself -- no matter what your absolute level of accomplishment.
We do not have a New Horizons band within reasonable distance, either, but we started going independently to the various New Horizons camps and events last summer, and expect to continue that. In fact, we just got home from the Unicoi, GA New Horizons Jazz Camp, and we are signed up for Chautauqua in September, and might add Greensboro in July if things work out.
Take a look at the program being offered in June at Iowa City, or the one in September in Door County Wisconsin. I met people from the Iowa City group and Greensboro groups at Unicoi, and we've met a number of people from the Madison group at every event. It almost becomes a "floating" national seniors concert band.
