Yep, join the club! I play the clarinet better than the oboe and finally joined a Wind band about 18 months ago, believing I was a pretty good sight reader, reasonable player and could handle just about anything.
I remember the feeling of horror when our conductor handed out new parts, explained a bit about the piece, then everyone around me started playing it as if they'd been practising the whole week! Having played mainly classical music, I was totally unprepared for the 'interesting' rhythms of contemporary band music.. and the speed!!
However, it was good to be brought down to earth -with an almighty bump - and sure did make me practise more!
