Yeah, I thought so, too, but there's no come-one-come-all community band within effective reach. I had my hopes on a New Horizons Band, but the only ones are up in the Chicago area, and I'm downstate (wayyyy downstate).
There are three community orchestras/bands about an hour away in either direction through the cornfields, but one practices on Wednesday nights, which for me is already earmarked for church stuff, the second one has a tremendously heavy Christmas schedule every year (I'd have to be up there nearly every night during the first part of December), and the third is a very small-town band, is only in the summers and is clearly for the locals.
And then (most disappointing of all) the city where I live has a municipal band and a Symphony orchestra, but the band is staffed by professional musicians (amateurs are clearly not invited, only those who have made music a career, whether teaching or performing), and the bulk of the orchestra is the "music people" from the local liberal arts college, with a sprinkling of extremely gifted townies.
So, I guess I'll just keep practicing with my Robert W. Smith CD and wait. I've learned over the years that if you wait long enough, things change.
