i'm very careful not to yank the swab through the oboe and attempt to pull gently so that there is the least noise possible from the friction between the silk and the wood. however, not everybody believes swabbing damages the bore. Sawicki in his oboe repair opus The Oboe Revealed (no longer in print i believe) takes that position. but it makes sense to be careful.
