 Re: High note fingerings needed

I play a Loree DM. One thing to note is that i play on short scrape reeds. I find the same problem with making the notes sound pure as well with the 3rd octave key fingerings and i have no idea why as well.

Having the half hole key open is actually something i had the repairman do for me, i think it is unnecessary to lift left hand first finger if the top plate actually opens more than our usual set up. The reason i asked for that was because i wanted to lift instead of roll for everything. I find it is a bit dependent on the reeds whether i have to add resonant fingerings to stabilize my C# and above. (I lip a lot using the normal short fingerings because they are sharp most of the time.)

As for the diamond shape, i didn't figure it out, it was a matter of coincidence. I was getting myself an overhaul for my oboe, the repairman asked whether he could replace the pad on the top plate and thereby destroy the diamond. Being slightly boggled, i paid him a visit and was surprised to be told that my oboe was actually one of the rare ones with a diamond shaped half hole!

Apparently, different makers have different "defaults" and the actual shape and opening size will affect the response, tone, and intonation of the notes that require the half hole. The height of the top plate is a variable here as well so a sort of formula can be figured according to personal preferences. Maybe Chris can shed a light on us regarding this topic? I ended up with a round but small hole instead of a diamond shape.

How do you find the fingerings?

Regards,
Howard
