 Re: High note fingerings needed

Second that some reeds just absolutely WILL NOT play anything higher than D3.

For me, I succeed in obtaining what my husband calls "the dog whistle notes" by rolling the reed in so far that I'm actually quite a bit further down the reed than optimal "play only on the tip!" advice would suggest.

So it's possible that there's nothing wrong with the fingerings in your method book, it's just that your reed won't go there, and you're still conscientiously maintaining your position on the very tip of the reed. Question: what method book is it?

Also, different makes of oboe can have different optimal fingerings. My Fox 333 came with an official fingering chart that is slightly different for a few notes from the fingerings I've seen around in various method books, most notably in that they don't call for the right pinky to be down on the Low F Fork fingering, and if you do put it down, it makes the note worse.

So what kind of oboe do you have?
