Another good idea is a used oboe. I had a beginner oboe that I used 30 years ago, but when I started with a community band after 15 years off I knew I needed a more capable instrument. I didn't have a lot of money. I bought a good used Rigoutat REIC with a plastic top joint. My community band plays exclusively outdoor concerts and the temperature shift from practice room to band shell can be brutal. Best of all, the instrument sounds great indoors too! Used oboe purveyors like Nora Post or Hannah's Oboes, among others, will ship instruments to you so you can test drive them.
