Before disparaging the preparation of oboists who work on reeds on the gig, please consider: an active professional needs to constantly be working on reeds to keep up with all the rehearsals and concerts, not to mention practice; the perfect reed or two on one night may not be perfect the next night because of changes in climate, humidity, barometric pressure, etc., not to mention the wearing down of the reed; reed-making at home may not produce the ideal reed for conditions in the performance hall; minute on-site adjustments in an otherwise good reed might permit, e.g., a cleaner low attack or more singing tone, when a reed begins to change during a performance. I frequently noticed Joe Robinson, former principal of the NYPhil, working on his reeds on stage prior to a concert.
