Oh, good, I'm glad to hear someone else saying, "You can do it without a teacher".
Because I've been doing it without a teacher coming up on three years this March. I already played a woodwind (recorder) and piano, and I sang in choir, and I had an extensive interest in classical music (particularly Baroque), so I already had a sense of "this sounds bad" and "this sounds good" to assist me with whether the noise I was making was "music" or "noise".
And all the rest of it I picked up from Internet printouts (*extensive* Internet printouts ) and books, and especially these forums.
And my expectatations are low--I'm not aiming at a professional career, I just wanted to play the oboe. If I were focusing on doing it for a living, I would certainly have been under a teacher's care.
So if you have the motive, means, and opportunity, I say go for it. Don't wait until some magical "perfect" moment, because "he who hesitates is lost".
