If the interest and opportunity is there, don't stop...just go for it. However, I would recommend getting just one or two lessons from a pro oboist just to get off on the right foot with the right embouchure. That is really important. Learning yourself from a book thereon as to fingerings, etc., wouldn't be too bad. Then when you're ready to go full force, you'll be a few steps ahead of the game. Old habits aren't that hard to break as long as you stay focused on correcting the habit. Don't wait, just do it.
