Margaret, I taught myself the oboe for over a year before finally starting lessons.
I bought a twenty year old Fox Renard with no left hand F and spent hours devouring every bit of info I could find on the internet about embouchures, reeds etc.
I'd done the same with clarinet years before. The oboe embouchure took a bit of practice, but if you use a soft reed, it's not too difficult. You just have to remember that it will make your lips and cheeks very tired and it takes a long time to get used to it.
One site I remember:
http://www.oboesforidgets.com/brands.htm (read the tips!)
but just do a google search for oboe embouchure!
When I started lessons, the major revelation was that I hadn't been putting enough air through the oboe and I'd been squeezing the reed a bit too hard.
If you're enthusiastic about it, you can do it.
Steve
