I think your last sentence sums it up pretty well...you'll be frustrated and get a lot of bad habits.
The frustration is likely because you won't be able to have someone tell you when you have a lousy reed, and be able to fix it for you. Oboe reeds aren't like clarinet reeds--small changes can mean the difference between frustration and joy.
