Greetings! I am a newcomer to the oboe & this bulletin board. I decided last year, at age 53, to learn the oboe because I just love the sound of this incredible strument and thought, why not try? I am a choral singer & can read music, but never before played a wind instrument. I have a teacher and have been playing about 9 months now. After renting a student oboe for the first six months, I recently bought a Loree, which I love.
In terms of skill level, I am starting to work my way through Barret's "Forty Progressive Melodies" (edited by Hite) (now on # 14). I practice about 30-45 minutes a day.
Last night I decided to record myself playing. Yikes! Although my teacher assures me that I am making good progress (and I believe him), the tone is still harsh, my tonguing is not smooth, and all around it made it clear to me how far I still have to go to achieve even a tolerable sound.
I would be interested in hearing from those of you who started learning oboe as adults -- what has been your experience in terms of developing your embouchure and achieving a decent sound?
Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
