Hello --
I've been learning to play the oboe since last November (clarinet is my "first" instrument). Things are actually going pretty well. But I notice that when I go above high g, my tone thins out noticeably, and gets strident. Below that, it is really quite warm and free, and the "altissimo" notes are also not bad. But a, b, and c are just puny. They "feel" difficult.
Is this a characteristic of the oboe, and/or is there something 1) that I am not quite doing right or 2) that needs adjusting on my instrument? (I'm playing a Yamaha 411.)
I'd also like to ask if there are any particular tricks of the trade for getting across the octave break (between the second c and d) smoothly. Sometimes I can do it, and sometimes not. It seems to have something to do with air pressure and not interferring with the reed, but I wish I could consistently just glide across these intervals.
Thanks for your wisdom.
