I mistyped: I meant attacking not attaching. To play in the high range of the oboe you really do need a responsive reed. If the reed is too soft the reed closes up and the notes will not come.

When playing the oboe as a beginner, concentrate on the notes you can play first. Develop the sound first; technique you can pick up later. What may help some is use a tape recorder set up about 12 feet away. What you are hearing when you play oboe is not what the people out front hear. The sound you hear is coming through your jawbone and is somewhat distorted. Listening to other oboe players can give you an idea of tonal quality.
