I agree that nothing is lost with modern instruments. It's the style that counts, not the timbre. It's always been puzzling to me that our modern musical culture seems the most preoccupied with the use of period instruments when performing music of an era that embraced transcription and seemed little concerned with the specific timbre employed.

Having said that, there are period instrument specialists whose playing I very much admire. Alfredo Bernardini and Paolo Grazzi especially. But it's their style I enjoy, not necessarily their choice of instrument.
