"But play the trills how you feel they should be played - if you like it to start on the upper or lower note, do which ever one sounds better."
I absolutely agree. I find the study of past performance practices fascinating, so I do my best to keep up to date with the research, and I strongly believe that the study of performance practices is helpful for developing a genuine and convincing sense of style, BUT I think it's a terrible shame when performers make interpretive decisions against their better musical judgment out of slavish adherence to rules and regulations. After all, the next generation of musicologists may end up showing that everything we think today is right is actually wrong! I love the baroque recordings of Heinz Holliger, Allan Vogel, Alex Klein, and many others, even though much of what they do is dismissed by some so-called experts as "unauthentic."
Cheers,
Drew
