 Re: practicing trills

Oh that wrecked D - C in Telemann's A minor sonata (2nd movement)!
Some things that helped me:

- Decide how many notes are going to be in the trill. Seriously! It will help
immensely because there is a certain logic with how many notes you can
actually fit into one specific duration.
- Use a metronome and play the the notes before and after without the trill
itself in time. For example, in the Telemann, you get an eighth note G
before the D-C trill then two 32nd notes i.e. B-C then two 16nd notes
i.e. D-G then D right after. Make sure that this is absolutely secure for
every trill that you are going to do before actually practising the trill itself.
- Start really slow to ensure that your fingers are not too high so that
they do not hinder speed. Increase metronome speed by 4 beats after 3
successful trills in context with the notes mentioned above and never
increase the speed unless you are absolutely secure. Don't take it easily
and try very hard to find the problem with a mirror if you can't do it at a
certain tempo. Concentrate hard and don't make a mistake over and over
again! That creates a false muscle memory and you will regret that!

I basically have problems when it comes to trills using the ringer finger and pinky with either finger pressed. So it is at the end of the day practising like hell and be really precise and disciplined that works for me. No i don't think it deteriorates that much with age, like everything else it is an acquired technique which will not go away unless you stop practising it or a certain disease affects you. Just listen to those amazing trills of Han de Vries! Hah! And he is not exactly young. I am curious with everyone else's ideas! Hope this helped.

Howard
