I was actually taught to hold the oboe down somewhat--and to bring the lower jaw back to compensate. Singers bring the jaw back to get a more "covered" or darker tone, and I think at least one school of oboe playing believes that resonance on the player side of the reed is an important part of tone production. Thus oboists should do what singers do--bring the jaw back to get a more covered tone. This brings the lower lip back relative to the upper, so that the "neutral" angle of the reed is lowered, and it makes sense to hold the oboe lower.

Try singing a vowel sound with your mouth open, and move the lower jaw backwards and forwards, without changing the opening. You will hear a definite change in the timbre--even to the extent that the vowel may not be the same in forward and backward positions.
