When I did 'West Side Story' a while back (reed 3) I was juggling with enough instruments and I used the sling on cor - in hindsight it'd have been much easier if I didn't as I wouldn't have been getting flustered hooking it up with what little time there was in switching from one instrument to another, and the sling just ended up being more hassle than it was worth.
But for prolonged playing times I will use the sling to keep the weight off.
I do play soprano sax without a sling as it gets in the way - if I played a curved soprano I'd use a sling, but not on a straight soprano.
Although I thoroughly recommend the Quodlibet FHRED support and realise the benefits from such a simple device, I don't actually use one myself - though in time I may use one.
