It depends how ling you are playing cor for at any time. If you're playing non-stop for over 10 minutes, then by all means use a sling to save your arm. It's better to prevent any harm than to try and cure it.
But if it's only fits and starts (ie. pit work) then you do need to be able to chop and change quickly with all the other instruments you're juggling with.
