Regarding plumber's tape - I use regular plastic food-wrap, which is vastly superior. It is thinner, stickier, more flexible and invisible.
Take a roll of food wrap (the make doesn't matter), and with a razor slice a 1.1 cm roll out of the middle. wrap a loop of reed-thread around the roll to use as a guide. It takes a couple of tries to get the perfect roll.
Once you have created your own little roll of plastic-wrap-for-reeds, you just wrap it directly onto the reed; I start on the thread wrap up and around the base of the reed, and back onto the thread where I just pull tight to break it off.
One roll will last you for years.
