Has anyone tried putting a little bit of tubing over the end of the English horn stable? I read about this in Jay Light's "The Oboe Reed Book." Toward the end of the book, he as a short section on EH reeds, and Light complained about the connection of the staple to bocal. He wrote that Grover Schlitz of the Chicago Symphony recommended:
"... slipping a short length of neoprene tubing over the bocal and then sliding it back over the end of the tube [staple] to form a sort of sealing gasket over the connection."
I'd forgotten the comment, but when I bought some EH reeds at IDRS this summer, they all had a bit of tubing at the end of the staple extending a few millimeters beyond the end. This seems to make the reeds stay on the bocal more securely, and I suspect help with the seal.
Since then, I purchased a few feet of 1/4" vinyl tubing at the local hardware store (It was about 12 cents a foot.). I slip the tubing over the bottom of the staple and trim it with a razor blade. I've been doing this after the reed is made.
I find that it works best to stretch the tubing a bit first with my needle-nose pliers so that I can get it onto the staple.
