Off topic, but dry humidity related to reeds

Cooper,

Congratulations on your successful pilgimage back to the US.

I went to your site and saw your first info re: dry weather reeds.

I would suggest slightly thinner and perhaps slightly longer hearts instead of thicker gouge.

I realize I don't know your gouge all that well but on several posts you mentioned thicker sides. So 48- 58 mm or 50 - 60 mm side to center variances should be good and that accounts for the thicker sides I like as well.

I know it seems counter-intuitive but try thinner hearts for lower humidity for a few reeds and I think you will see what I mean. And perhaps a slightly thinner area just right and left of center as the lay enters the heart.

I also find using a less-pronounced inverted V helps here. That relates to the previous idea and puts some springiness back in the response. And sometimes a much less pronounced 'offset' in the tip trimming,.. its there but hardly noticeable, helps in dry climates.

Hearts starting around 64.5 - 66 mm for a 69 -70 mm finished length.

Even with my 46 mm staples I get good CO reeds using this approach, and when I went back east this summer found the dimensions worked great but I needed a slightly thicker heart in the high humidity for June in Va.

If you do get to CO soon, look me up and we will have some serious oboe fun.

take care,

-Craig
