ok...i like the bruno walter studio recordings he made with the "pickup" Columbia Symphony in the '50s, e.g. Beethoven's 6th...it's not that the oboe playing is particularly distinguished, but the studio recording allows the chamber-like aspects of many of the passages, including the many featuring oboe, to be clearly heard, not like you're sitting in row 50 in Avery Fisher Hall. That's my problem in general with orchestral recordings - if you get used to sitting in the middle of the orchestra, you realize how much fine detail is lost in most recordings.
