American orchestral 'oboe' recordings.....I like Bloomstedt's account of the Strauss Alpensinfonie with the San Francisco Symphony a lot. It is spectacularly recorded, and i acquired it from a 2nd hand shop in Hong Kong many many years ago. One of my first introductions to orchestral oboe in general. Still like it despite me being a European style oboist! Was it William Benett on that record? Another one i really like is Reiner's account of, coincidentally, also by Strauss, the Sinfonia Domestica with the Chicago Symphony.
Solti's Brahms cycle with the CSO generally has a lot of beautiful oboe playing too, and i assume it's Ray Still? (I seem to have a bias towards CSO - my favourite American Orchestra, because i seem to like so many CSO records!) Another CSO favourite is Alex Klein with Boulez conducting Stravinsky's Firebird ballet. The last American recording which left me a deep impression with gorgeous American style oboe playing is Ralph Gomberg with BSO in Listz's Faust Symphony with Bernstein.
