That seems to be about right, from what I've seen. My teacher now was one of his masters students, and the professor I'll be under next year also studied with him. I've met him once or twice.
Supposedly he also saves nearly all his reeds and labels them with the last date he played them as well as the weather conditions from that day and the reed's playing characteristics.
His wife, Janice Tipton, is also very nice. She's usually the person who answers if you call their house. She's also featured on "Oboe Obsession" playing the flute in the Bach piece.
