It really is best to not drink anything but water if you are playing (and obviously, no eating either!) although I regularly break this rule! Not only will it gunk up the keywork, but more immediately it will destroy your reeds. Of course, high sugar drinks or milk are worse than sugar free stuff, but be aware that you are coating your purchase (or time-consuming crafted item if you make your own) with crud. I advise at least rinsing your mouth with water before playing, brushing if possible.

RE swabbing and breaking down the instrument - get serious! It only takes 2 seconds to swab (with a pull through) and maybe 8 more to break down your instrument. I am kind of a stickler about always folding my swab up after use (so it dries flat) which probably takes 10 more seconds. I put my oboe away even during breaks when we have rehearsal (breaks are usually 10 minutes). I know that seems a bit much, but I have seen too many people lose instruments getting knocked off of chairs. When I'm practicing at home I will leave my oboe (face up) if I'm just taking a short break, but if I think it will be longer than 15 minutes I swab and break it down.

BTW Judy, dollar bills are (I guess) ok in an emergency situation, but usually money is very dirty and would exacerbate the problem rather than help! Try using cigarette papers (the ungummed kind are best but harder to find - all big double reed shops carry them though, a pack is usually a dollar or less). Although if your keys are regularly sticking that is a temporary fix at best. They are also good for mucking water out of your keys and I have a pack in each case. Good luck!
