Some good minds have put some real thought into this. Unfortunately, there's little on this planet that matches arundo donax for its unique combination of strength, resiliency and lightness of mass. It really is a remarkable plant.

A step in the right direction was made with the discovery of a way to create polymers with directional strands. These have been used recently in the manufacture of plastic clarinet reeds. But even here, they are not considered of a high enough quality for concert performance, but rather as "practice reeds" only.

You can uncover a lot of this information by going to the patent office web site and searching for patents on plastic reeds.
