Re: Synthetic reeds...Would it be safer to get a softer or harder reed?

I've read of bassoonists actively using plastic reeds and working on ways to make them workable.

Here's some interesting things that popped up in a search:

Tips on adjusting plastic bassoon reeds:

A positive plastic bassoon reed mention in performance (search for 'plastic') :
http://idrs.colorado.edu/publications/dr/DR8.2/DR8_2Lee.htm

A mention that a store bought plastic Renard bassoon reed... is suprising well balanced and playable:

However... oboe reeds are a different breed. It wouldn't hurt to try a plastic oboe reed, but you may just find that you wasted money AND you don't get the same satisfaction trying to smash a plastic reed into a desk <g>.

Regards,
Stephen
