Re: Synthetic reeds...Would it be safer to get a softer or harder reed?

Well, it grows just about anywhere: the USDA has classed it as an invasive weed, with a range basically over the entire US except for the very northernmost tier of states. And the NPS has it listed under their "Alien Plant Working Group", with specific instructions for exactly what kind of weedkiller you need to spray on it to get rid of it. So it's not something that The Powers That Be would be happy to find you had planted out in your back 40 acres. And since it's invasive, forget about cultivating "just a small patch" out behind the garage, because first thing you know, it'll be all down the alley.

If you had a big enough greenhouse, I suppose you could cultivate it there, but since the plants grow 10 feet tall, and each one only gives a small amount of material for reeds, I doubt whether you'd get many useful reeds out of your one greenhouse.

The USDA has a county-by-county distribution map, so I suppose that theoretically you could go pick your own.
