By sax system I mean a saxophone player would use the same fingerings on the oboe. The instrument I saw is not a bottom level instrument; it was made by Loree.
Purpose of the instrument I suppose was to allow the army bands of World War II to get a quick oboe player IF the player learned the playing characteristics of the double reed. I do understand that there were single reed attachments for the oboe years ago, but I don't know if the single reed was played on the Loree. I doubt it since the tone would be drastically changed.
Until I saw the instrument I was not aware such a high end instrument was made with identical sax fingerings.
