I know I work for the company and will probably get a slapped wrist for doing so, but do try the Howarth S45c oboes - these have the thick joints and a thick, dark tone. The S55c is a full Gillet (w/D#-E trill), and has been made with plastic top joints for the US market.
Both these are at the top range of the student/intermediate level oboes.
