<<second year oboe studies>>
Q -- Beginner's second year, as in, started playing from scratch just one year ago? Does your daughter have any particular oboe on her wishlist?

No Yamaha 211 for any second year student, it's basic beginner first year only. Barrington would do if she's just playing high school band or equivalent, although there are better 'band student' oboes out there, what comes well recommended as a sturdy student oboe around where you live?

Unnecessary to buy full conservatory for a beginner student (minimum 'full conservatory' would include low B-flat with B-flat resonance, left F and forked F resonance key, split D-ring, alternate A/B trill key, the 3rd octave key, and there are other extra useful extra keys). The split D-ring mechanism all by itself adds approx. $1500 to cost of instrument

Spend more money on hand-made reeds instead for the next few years, these are more likely to support and assist improvements in her general sound than an expensive top-line full conservatory oboe

... Have you looked into one very important detail when considering a really good oboe? If something goes wrong with it, where send, turn-around time? Backup instrument short-term rental options? so daughter can continue daily practising ... or play in the concert!

... BUT, if a good used full conservatory oboe comes up within your price range :-) lock onto it right away -- after having teacher or other oboe expert check into it carefully for you

However, if <<second year>> means university level music studies majoring on oboe, forget both yamaha and barrington, will probably need full conservatory right away, consult oboe profs immediately, they may have distinct preferences and might not smile as kindly at students on other instruments, yeah, these things do happen in real world
