Re: When is everybody using Left F?

D-oboe said what I was going to say, apart from technical passages where forked F is required (i.e. F-Eb-Db) the main thing is that on most oboes the forked F has quite a different timbre than the rest of the scale and it really does stick out. Oboes that have a forked F resonance key (you'll see it if you have it, when you finger forked F it's a little key below the C, C# and Eb keys that opens up) have a forked F that sounds more like the rest of the scale, but it still does stick out a bit. However, the colour can often be really nice! Some people use that different colour deliberately. I know that for one, De Lancie in his famous recording of the flower clock deliberately used forked F in the opening from the very first note because he loved the colour of it. It's definitely a unique flavour!
