My experience so far has been that reeds get softer and mushier as they get older, but this week I'm struggling with a Forrest's reed that has been fine for quite a long time now, but suddenly it's as though it has bumped itself up a grade in hardness, and even after a night's rest, I can barely play more than a few bars with it without having to work at getting it to sound. So does this happen to anyone else, or am I just having a Senior Embouchure Moment? I have tried a short peroxide soak to de-gunk it, and that hasn't helped.
Of course this would be the week that I'm supposed to play a duet with the Clarinet at church on Sunday. [roll eyes] Is there some kind of federal mandate that you only have reed trouble when there's something important coming up? I do have backup reeds, but I hate having to switch. I want my good old reed! Wahhh...
