My thinking for why a wider shape would feel softer than a thinner shape is a matter of fulcrum or leverage. I don't know if this would make sense, but in my theory, the further you move the rails away from each other, the more the resistance is reduced, given the same scrape is applied. I think this would be because the points propping open the tip would be further apart from each other, increasing the power your lips would have closing the reed. I have no proof of this thought.
