Opening a can of worms here, but anyway...
When I return home in 15 ish months, I am planning on selling reeds to local students as our only supply is K.Ge (or Rico et al...) which is expensive and supply is scatty at best. And I figure I can then offer a re-caning service.
Anyway, I am great at making the right strength reeds for myself, obviously, (and pretty good at making them too hard as well!) but if I were to make reeds for beginners, what is the main factor/s controlling reed strength? It is gouge thickness? Just the scrape? Cane hardness? I would be making short-scrape reeds but I am assuming that most of these factors would be global.
I guess my overall question is, can you use your own setup (gouge thickness, shape, hardness, etc) to produce consistent softer student reeds? Or would I need to alter which cane that I purchase for this purpose?
