You can use your knife edge for an easel; just lay the concave side of the cane at its midpoint & fold over the knife edge…slowly. The cane will score itself during this procedure. Then pare the edges of the folded cane to fit between the ears of the shaper tip. This eliminates the need for one more piece of equipment.

And yes, The Thread Exchange (in Weaverville, Northl Carolina…how's that for namefreakism???) used to be a great source for tons of thread, but now all they sell is bonded (shiny) FF. Years ago (2007), I bought two one pound spools (3,000 yards times two) of green & khaki soft nylon, which will outlive me…at a cost of $1.48 per 200 yards. Hard to pass up a deal like that, but what with Rice & Gudebrod no longer making the stuff, I figured why not? The trouble with the bonded thread is that it tends to slip on the cane once tension is added. You really have to watch the process carefully & tie perfectly perpendicular to the mandrel/staple to make it go. The soft nylon coated with a little bit of beeswax is much easier to work with, IMHO.
