I use a piece of tube cane for an easel. I measure out the length of the gouges piece of cane, divide by two, mark that point from the end on the tube of cane and make a score around it. I measure out oboe and English horn so I only deal with one easel rather than two. To use i lay the piece of gouged cane on the tube, turn it on it's end and gently tap on the table to correctly line it up, lay my knife in the score on the tube and mark the gouged cane as usual. Its great because I can taper the ends of the cane without damaging my knife blade on the end pieces of a regular type easel. When my homemade easel gets too chipped up I can easily make a new one.

A while back someone posted about thread thickness and corresponding numbers. That was a great help as there are many online sources for inexpensive thread in many colors.
