Good thread, Rachel.

I made a reed drying stand out of a nice piece of wood, 1x3 and 3/4 think about a foot long. I just glued old staples in 3 rows and it holds 30 reeds. Between the staples is enough space for me to queue up the next gouged cane I will process into reeds.

RE: your reed case making... if you can, please do the full monty on your process with notes and pics. At least for your ribbon making procedure.

Some time back I wrote a fairly lengthy essay out here about the economics of gouging your own cane. If you buy a lot of gouged cane, say 150 - 200 pieces a year (about a pounds yield of blanks) , the roi is pretty short. Then you are saving money.

When you do get a micrometer, be sure to get one with a rounded end or possibly a flat one with a little round bearing inside a rubber sleeve. It acts like a prosthetic extension, causes the dial reading to be off by the diameter of the bearing, but worked fine.

And it was cheaper than my current reed micrometer by far. I found it in some country hardware store in VA 30+ years ago.
