My teacher, Raymond Dusté was also a Tabuteau student, having studied with him while stationed in Philadelphia during WWII. He said Tabuteau would play his best reed and announce in his thick French accent, "Zis ees not a rrreed. Zis ees a shlivaire [sliver]. A rrreed must vibrrrate!" and he'd throw it on the back of the bench. If you had wrapped it with a distinctive thread you might see it played in that night's performance.

I particularly liked Jay Light's laundry basket image! (For those who haven't read the book, Light says you need to put a laundry basket next to your reed bench. When it is full of your discards, you MAY know something about what you are doing...
