Your habit of never taking out your knife in public is probably a good safety practice as well as modesty. I'm finding myself doing it less and less, mostly because my concentration is better in solitude. And I dislike 'hassling' with items I might very well lose during a rehearsal.

One place I do keep reed tools handy: in a lesson. I won't spend much time 'adjusting' a student's reed but every now and again it's a great teaching moment.

"I always practice with the worst..." is similar to what I do, playing through various batches of the 'reeds in process' and adjusting during practice times at home. I'm afraid I am quite fond of touching up reeds, to the point where the regimented practice can suffer at times. Which is why I will likely never get to the recording stage of the solo artist!
