I'm taking my terms from the Weber book, as I'm self taught with the help of this book. Actually, I just got "The Oboe Reed Book" by Jay Light and have "Oboe Reed Styled: Theory and Practice" by David Ledet coming in the mail this week. Anyhow,

The overlap is set after the reed is clipped. I do believe this helps the reed tip to not get caught on itself when it's vibrating. Maybe it also helps with the apature, I'm not completely sure. Basically, it's just sliding the piece of cane on the opposite side of the reed to one side. (I slide it to the right, others may prefer otherwise).

I am still very much working on reedmaking. It is a task.
