Well, I am asking this question because early-on, from listening to myself play on recorded snippets, I discerned that a reed that FEELS not particularly vibrant (say, a 2.5 on my scale as elaborated by Cooper) actually sounds better than, say, an 8 on the same scale.
But I have been partnered (in an auditioned group of very capable players) with a person whose reeds and whose sound is much, much more to the upper end of the vibrancy scale than mine -- his error is on the side of too much color and vibration, while mine may in fact be on the side of too LITTLE color and vibration.
So, I am kind of in the process of redefining my sound, and perhaps getting less afraid of having a little bit of, shall we say, "edge" to my tone, which allows for warmth and expression and color in a way that I have not permitted before.
Thus, I am really interested to hear what you all have to say about the degree of vibrancy that you feel, and I am wondering if I have been accepting a lack of warmth and color in my sound as a trade-off for pitch and stability, attributable in the final analysis to a fundamentally underdeveloped embouchure and sound concept.
