Susan,
I pose the problem differently - it is the type/location of the reed vibration which I feel is important.
You have tip vibrations, blend vibrations, heart vibrations, back vibrations each contributing to the different harmonics.
I feel that resistance and vibration are different. You can have a pleasant tone and resistance ... and you can lessen the resistance and still maintain tone.
You can increase vibration in many parts of the reed: the tip, the blend (sides and center), the heart (channels or across the plateau), the back windows (shallow and/or long) etc.
As per the scale - I do not want to play a raucous reed or for that matter a dead one - it have to be alive and do what I need it to do.
