My daughter is both a serious oboe and serious sax player. She says she can't stand most of the oboe players she's met--both high school age in our area, and many orchestral professionals. She says they are snobby, self-obsessed and rude. Perhaps they are taught to be this way at conservatories? On the other hand, sax players are humble, much friendlier and laid back.

During her upcoming summer music institute, she plans on training with the oboes during the day, and hanging out with the sax players in the evening.

However, students should pick their instruments based on whether they like that particular instrument or like, not on the personalities of others that play it.
