I have to disagree with all the above.

I'm an engineer.. always had that way of looking at things, but I'm philosophical, not athletic; concerned with the aesthetics around function rather than the opposite. My main teacher was the typical French-Canadian Hockey loving male. Of oboe players (decent to excellent), I've known many effeminate men and Disney-stereotype women, I've met a small handful of down-to-earth practicality women. Plenty of typical automobile-piloting men.

Seriously, in my experience (a long time before the Internet), the "typical persona" of the oboe player seems related to where a person lives, which school and which language more than anything else.

It's POSSIBLE that if the reeds you typically get just don't accept a strong air pressure and an aggressive playing style, this would limit to the more dainty people --- and on the converse extra-hard & open reeds will eliminate the athletic.

But if it's a matter of getting children/people to choose between instruments, I'd say play some You-Tube vids of many styles and let them try.
