The whole "reed thing" practically guarantees a high level of introspective obsessive neurosis (with CJ on that one!!). On the other hand, principal oboists tend to balance that with the secret desire to be the banana showboats of the orchestra...look ma, I'm soloin'!! That's how I explain the bipolarity in Howard's post. There's a bit of the old passive aggressive in there too, the introverted oboist ready to spring their snake charming act on the rest of the orchestra, almost begging for attention...didn't think there was that much personality hiding in there, did you!? I've always thought Alex Klein played like he really wished he had an alto sax in his hands - almost too much personality there for an oboist! But it's what makes him exceptional. And a well-known German oboist to be left unnamed could be confused with a rock star (or at least at times it seems he confuses himself with one - can't quite pull off the act). Captures the impossible duality of it all almost to perfection, that guy. Strange instrument!
