Robin...i completely understand what you mean. Indeed on a particular day last week i was contemplating about the very same problem. Knowing the crow will at least give us some consistency isn't it?

Geoffrey Browne said that the most reliable way to make short scrape cor reeds is to always measure from the top of the staple to the end both when tying and scraping. 28-30 seems to be the norm for him. The rest apparently relies on the bocal and instrument. I guess simply there hasn't been enough research done into the playing of the cor. I have tried googling but even some of the best cor players in the states seem to give very vague suggestions....
